Welcome to the blog world! I noticed Cloudstreet is one of your favourite books - me too! What did you think of 'The Turning'? I think it's an incredible book and the best thing Winton's done since Cloudstreet (most of the other novels have structural problems and are slightly unrealised, which is not to say they're not worth reading). Asher Lev is also an old favourite of mine (along with most other things Potok has written). And I think His Dark Materials is seriously wonderful. Good luck with that long list of books!

Hi Meli - Thanks! I liked The Turning quite a bit (oh, in fact I read that in '07 too and it's not on the list). It's a dark disjointed book, but some of the scenes and characters really stayed with me, especially the women who lives in the trailer with the abusive husband. I can see that whole world vividly. I enjoyed the Rider too but nothing he's done has yet approached Cloudstreet. It is a whole world unto itself and the voice so distinctive.
I too have enjoyed almost all of Potok, read him faithfully all through high school, though I've never been able to bring myself to read the sequel to Asher Lev, it feel like a adultery somehow.

I'm doing the summer reading challenge, too. I'll look forward to seeing what you have to say about The Yiddish Policeman's Union. I've been curious about that one.
