Fantastical Escape (Books - Sabriel by Garth Nix)
I've finished Garth Nix's Sabriel last night. It really lived up to the promise of its first few chapters, as posted here. Good gripping adventure, a little romance, and a convincingly written young heroine on the edge of adulthood. The world of Sabriel sits in on the border of life and death. Certain people can travel freely between them, some for evil and some for good. Unlike some fantasies, there aren't so many unrecognizable creatures, places, or props with new names that I get lost in trying to remember them. Nix gradually builds up the reader's knowledge of the world so that one moves from ignorance to relative fluency as Sabriel herself does. The last 80 pages or so were very suspencefully written. If you're looking to escape the pressures of, say, finals for a couple of hours, this is just the thing - very enjoyable. I'm awaiting books II & III in the mail.
