Best of 2008 in advance

Dewey is going to cull a list of best books published in 2008 from her geeky compadres, so here is my contribution and I encourage you to create a list too and post your link at Dewey's place so she can count your vote! I link to each of my posts on these novels on my side bar, in case you're interested.

Life Class - Pat Barker
Unacustomed Earth - Jhumpa Lahiri
Netherland - Joseph O'Neill
The House on Fortune Street - Margot Livesey
Breath - Tim Winton
The Lazarus Project - Aleksandar Hemon

...and if you are willing to count English Language editions:

How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone - Sasa Stanisic (trans. Anthea Bell)

I have an ARC of How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone (thanks to my library -- I just love it when they give away their ARCs!). Good to know you consider it a favorite! Life Class didn't thrill me, although I was quite taken with the author's writing and want to read more.

I loved Barker's Regeneration trilogy which I read this year. It will most likely make it to my best of list for 2008.

I might get Life Class for my book club, if it's out in paperback soon enough.

I couldn't pick a top ten but was impressed by Breath and Unaccustomed Earth so am glad to see them on your list.

I haven't read the Regenration trilogy yet, so will try that before Life Class. I'm interested by How the soldier repairs the gramophone and am saving Netherland up to read in front of the cricket this summer.

I almost picked up Unacustomed Earth earlier today but then remembered giant TBR pile at home. I haven't read any of the books you mentioned otherwise.

Bookfool - I loved How the Soldier... fantastically imagined!

CB & Sarah - The Regeneration Trilogy is amazing - it surpasses Life Class in my book.

Trish - I know what you mean but I cannot say I am as disciplined!
